- The Cincinnati Police Department began conducting Citizens Police Academies in 1994, and since then 41 Citizen Police Academies have been conducted. Currently, 4 Citizens Police Academies are conducted each year.
- The CPA consists of 8 sessions on Wednesday evenings between the hours of 6 PM to 9 PM. Light refreshments are served.
- The CPA will expose citizens to a number of current law enforcement issues and is a positive/relationship building experience for citizens and the officers involved.
- The CPA is not intended to train citizens to take police action or enforcement efforts, but rather provide citizens with an overview and insight into the training and functions performed by police officers.
- Topics covered include: Organizational overview, Internal Investigations, SWAT Team, Terrorism Early Warning Group, Laws of Arrest, Criminal Investigation Process, Mental Health Response Team, Gangs, Domestic Violence, Drug Awareness, Traffic Contacts, Use of Force, and Personal Safety.
- Citizens are offered the opportunity (not required) to do a police ride-a-longs and/or spend some time in the Police Communications Section as part of the program.
